Chapter 20

Night had fallen when I pulled the truck into the White’s driveway. Kristy and I yawned and stretched. We both were exhausted.

“Will you stay the night?” Kristy asked.

“No, I need to get Whitney home and into bed.” I grabbed the sack Kristy looted from the house. “Did you find anything you liked?”

“Yeah, you must have loved shoes because there were a few still in boxes.” She smiled.

“I did, but my feet grew so fast at that time, I hardly wore any of them.” I was happy someone was getting pleasure from them.

“I also grabbed a few shirts I think you should wear from your mother’s closet. I hope you don’t mind,” she said graciously.

“Thanks. I’ll take a look.”

We continued our girl talk as we were greeted at the front door by Hewitt. His smile was mixed with confusion and a bit of distress.

“Hey, Dad.”

“Hi, Hewitt. I hope we didn’t worry you.” I tried to read his face.

“You should see the things I got at Dustyn’s place.” Kristy beamed, emptying her sack.

“Not now.” Hewitt placed a hand on his daughter’s shoulder. “There is something I must tell you first.” Hewitt sighed then continued, “Whitney grew tired and crawled into the crib in the nursery.”

Kristy’s face grew ridged. I knew how she felt.

“I’ll go get her and we’ll go home now.”

“No. It’s okay. It’s time to move forward, right? Let her sleep there.” Kristy turned to me. “Will you stay too?”

Well, damn, another breakthrough for Kristy, letting someone else sleep in her deceased brother’s bedroom.

“Yes, Dustyn, please stay,” Hewitt pleaded.

I couldn’t feel Tresian near and that worried me. I didn’t want him to think I chose to stay there for any other reason.

“Sure.” I gulped.

I peeked in on Whitney and couldn’t believe she was comfortable crunched in the crib, but she was asleep and that was rare for her lately. I chose the room across from hers. It was on the ground floor near the kitchen, and a door away to the garden entrance.

With the girls tucked in bed, I left the door cracked open in case Whitney needed me during the night. I peeled off the dirty clothes I‘d had on for the past two days and threw them on a small bench that held two homemade rag dolls sitting on a star-shaped doily. I made a mental note to do laundry after unpacking in the morning. Typically, I slept in an oversize T-shirt that belonged to my father in the warmer months and nothing else, but lately, I’d been leaving on a pair of underwear.

The room was decorated in pristine white, like the rest of the house, and the antique queen-size bed looked promising for a good night's rest. However, the desire to see Tresian was greater than the need to sleep. The light from the moon lit the room, and I unlatched the window. The screen was gone, so I bent over the ledge to reach for my angel. I didn’t have to stretch my mind too far because the wind picked up and delivered Tresian a heartbeat later.
